Mission: First Dawn
Location: Langley Station - Deck 18 - Crew Mess
Timeline: Mission Day 25 at 1815

The replicator in Owen's quarters wasn't working, so he made his way to the Mess. On the way he recognised a familiar face.

"Hannah, what the Hell are you doing here?" He asked.

Hannah smiled. "Why does everyone ask me that? First Kate and now you." Hannah replied.

"You talked to Kate, how is she?" Owen asked. He hadn't seen her in nearly 2 year, but he still cared for her. Hearing her name made him smile.

"Sad, she misses you?" she said, interfering again in her brother's life. Even though she knew he hated that.

"I miss her too, but she made it plain, that she wasn't ready and I've respected that." Owen replied.

She crooked her face and looked at the brother smiling. "Well, you're bound to run into her some time, why not get it over with?"

Owen sighed. He knew she was right, but that didn't stop his nervousness. "I will." He said. His mind a flurry of emotions at the thought.

"When?" his sister asked. Knowing she needed to push him or he would never do anything.

"You're going to hound me until I do this, aren't you?" Owen asked already knowing the answer. "I was just about to get something to eat, I'll visit Kate afterwards."

"You bet you I am," Hannah said laughing. On a more serious tone, she continued. "I just like seeing you happy." Turning the conversation to another topic she asked him. "So, what are you working on lately?"

"I'm here to help the colony reintegrate into the Federation, so I've been studying their history. Hardy little colony, they're dealt with Cardassians, Dominion earthquakes, and droughts."

Hannah raised her eyebrows. "Well, good luck with that. From what I heard they're not so happy with having visitors."

"I've heard that too. Hopefully I can work my magic and get them onside." Owen said only half-joking.

While the siblings were talking Kate entered the mess hall to grab a quick meal to take to her office. She had still to much to do. As she spotted Owen she was shocked at first. Knowing someone was on board was not the same as actually seeing them. And Owen she hadn't seen in a long time. Taking the cowards way out, she quickly turned and left the room again, deciding to eat something later.

Hannah however, hadn't missed her. She quickly told her brother. "Behind you," then after he had seen who she was talking about she continued. "Guess this is your time to talk to her."

Owen sighed and followed Kate out of the Mess Hall. "Kate, wait up!" He called.

Kate stopped walking and closed her eyes for a few second before turning around. "Owen, hi,"

Owen was momentarily lost for words. "Hi..." He wanted to tell her beautiful she was, how proud her he was and how much he misses her, but he settled for "Kate, congratulations, this will be a fine station."

"Thank you," she replied. "How are you? Back with Starfleet I see."

"You're welcome." He replied. "I'm well. Yeah, I got sick of sitting around analysing data, regained my commission and returned to the field. I've been helping colonies reintegrate into the Federation." It was obvious by his manner, that he enjoyed his new job immensely.

"I could have told you that would be what was waiting for you back then, when you decided to become a civilian." Kate said sarcastic.

"I became a civilian, so we could be together, because Starfleet doesn't allow starship captains to date their subordinate officers." Owen explained.

"That's bull Owen, and you know it," Kate said. She took a deep breath. "We were already a couple when we were both department heads. Back on the Sentinel. Blake didn't think it would be a problem when he promoted me to be his XO, and I'm sure Starfleet didn't either or they wouldn't have given me the Endeavour."

"I was just trying to do what I thought was right." Owen replied.

Seeing Owen did the same thing he always did, avoid a discussion Kate decided this wasn't the place and time to have this conversation. She let out a breath. "Never mind," She had been hurt when he had made such a crucial decision without discussing it with her. And apparently that hurt was still there. "I'm happy you're on the station. You're a great scientist."

"Thank you, I'm happy to be here." Owen said. Perhaps she was right, maybe he'd done what he did to protect himself and was annoyed that she'd found him out.

"I really need to get back to work." Kate said.

"Okay, see you later." Owen said and headed back towards the Mess Hall.

Kate shook her head and headed in the opposite direction.
