Timeline: MD00 1025 Hours

Three months ago

“How do you mean you’re going to take him away from Earth,” James asked in a voice full of anger and surprise.

“I got a job on a space station as a PR consultant. A perfect opportunity to let pass. It’s what I’ve been working towards for years.” Tracy said her ex-husband, annoyed that she had to explain this. He knew of her ambition, or he would if he’d ever listened to her. They were standing in her office.
“You can’t just take Michael away from me. I’m his father.” He said.

“You’ve barely seen him over the last few years. You choose to work on a transport vessel. You choose a job that took you away from your son years ago. So don’t start with me when I make a decision about Michael and my life.” Tracy said, working very hard not to punch him in the face. “And it’s not like I take him to the middle of nowhere. Langley station is a regional hub for Starfleet and many transport companies.”

“Yes, I’ve heard of it. They’ve been open for a few months now. But still. Why didn’t you even talk to me about this? Don’t I have any rights anymore?” he said. “You know, I came here to discuss a way to see him more. He’s older now, maybe he can even join me sometimes during his breaks.”

In her worst nightmare this scenario had played out numerous times. James going to his father. She wasn’t sure how she would survive that.

Seeing the look on her face James scolded. “Jeez woman. I’m not asking for sole custody, just to see my son more often than once a year.” They might be divorced for more than a decade, but he could still read her. Not that it was very hard as she wore her emotions on her face.

“You just accused me of taking him away from me, and now you’re talking about having him be with you for weeks on end. How are you planning on doing that with your job?”

“I’ve saved enough through the years to have him be a passenger on the ship I work for. Or if he wants he can work for his stay. It’s up to him. I just want to get to know him. He needs a dad.”

“I get that. And he does need you.” She hated to admit that. “Look, I won’t leave till a couple of weeks. Let’s just see then what we can arrange when we are there. Maybe you can visit the station when your vessel is nearby.”

James sighed. “Sure. I’ll see what I can do. Is he home now?”

“No, he is at soccer practice. You can pick him up if you have time. I’m he’d like that.” Tracy said, offering an olive branch.

“I will,”

“Great, because I need to finish some stuff here.” She said, hoping he got the hint and left. He made her nervous.

He turned around and started walking towards the exit. Before he stepped out her office he turned and said. “Thanks T,”

She let out a breath once he left her office. Annoyed over his use of the old nickname.
