Personal History John, James Sheppard was born December 14th 2351 in Blue Island, Illinois. His family later moved to Tokyo Japan, where he studied several martial arts from the age of 4. Attended high school from the age of 14 until he was 18 years old. After finishing school John didn't quite know what to do with his life. And took up Eskrima for 2 years and then decided to apply for Starfleet marine academy and got accepted. After his four years at the academy he was assigned to the USS Backbone as a marine.

John saw a lot of action during a Federation - Cardassian conflict in mid July 2374 the Backbone was sent to the edge of Federation/Cardassian space to do recon but was attacked by a Cardassian Galor class warship. The Backbone was badly damaged during the fight and was invaded. The marines were able to defend the Backbone successfully. Both ships were damaged the Backbone was more damaged then the Galor. The captain of the Backbone talked with her senior staff who determined that the Backbone was too badly damaged and decided to do a little invading of her own.

The captain handpicked John's team for the invasion and gave them 30 minutes to brief his team and get them ready. After getting them ready he led his team onto the Galor and took out its crew. The marine team captured the First officer and commanding officer and gave the all clear for their captain to come aboard. When the captain beamed aboard a plasma conduit exploded as he was escorting her to the bridge. She died as they arrived at starbase 52. John was badly injured and had to be transported back to Starfleet medical along with a few other marines.

Upon arrival at the nearest medical Starbase, John underwent immediately surgery as the nurses had found shrapnel from the explosion in his chest, several of which dangerously close to his heart. The surgeons undertaking the operation had over the course of several hours been able to carefully remove most of the shrapnel from his body. Unfortunately they weren’t able to remove several pieces of shrapnel close to his heart.

In his recovery period a John started to become ill again and a horrible discovery was made during a routine checkup that his immune system had started to attack the foreign objects in his body. This caused an autoimmune disease and while doctors were able to provide a treatment fairly quickly they were only able to stabilize the condition with antibiotics and slow down the rate the metal was poisoning his body. At the end of the recovery period John felt better, yet often felt tired as a side effect of his medical condition. He talked to his counselor about it and was ultimately persuaded to stay in Starfleet but go into a different trade and suggested Engineering due to his interest in repairing and taking things apart.

He enrolled into the academy again but this time the Engineering course. Afterwards in 2393 John left the academy and became an engineer on the U.S.S. yorktown as an Assistant Chief Engineer at the same time he met a young promising medical officer who became not only became sort of his personal nurse but also a close friend But just as a short year had passed and his medical condition caught up with him. This caused him to retire from his current position and had to return to Starfleet medical for treatment. Few years went by before he was released from Starfleet medical but this time, retired and insearch of a home, eventually John wound up at Langley Station.

A short while after arriving at the station John met his old friend named Suzanne Quinn, They got to talking and eventually his condition came up but not only that John who has always had feelings for the girl but never actually admitted to say anything about them to her, until finally John did and Suzanne’s feelings for John proved to be the same. From that moment on Suzanne became dedicated to help John to get better.

Being familiar with John’s medical history and having gone through his medical record to get up to speed Suzanne came to the conclusion that they needed specialized help in dealing with John’s medical condition. And so John and Suzanne turned to Commander Caoimhe O'Connor the head of the Station’s research department.

Commander O’Connor looked into his case, the commander was willing to help however warning them of the many medical procedures and the high level of risk involved. Determined to get better John accepted the risks involved and the research into his condition began, unfortunately shortly thereafter his health deteriorated once more and John had to be taken to the station’s I.C.U. Suzanne and Commander O’Connor decided it was best to put John into a medically induced coma until his health improved.
